So I solved my mac-mini conundrum. It turned out that the problem originated from using 'wrong' computer monitor (a monitor attached to a docking station). When I hooked up the computer directly to the screen everything worked fine when holding the alt button. #linux #homeserver
I recently bought a Mac mini M4 Pro with 64 GB RAM. I am not disappointed. #macmini
In which I recommend that if you’re building or upgrading a moderately serious music-listening system, you use Qobuz and include a cheap Mac Mini: https://www.tbray.org/ongoing/When/202x/2025/06/22/Qobuz-and-Others
... I still can't believe that I found an m1 Mac Mini with 16 GB of unified memory for $275.
Over the past few months, I've been building out a home server that was originally purely to run on-prem LLMs. Since I wanted it to run killer AI, I named it "Delores." Over the weekend, I received a Mac Mini in the mail that I got a good deal on and set it up to augment Dolores. I was trying to figure out what to name it and eventually went with "Teddy."
From my laptop, iPads, etc, I can remote into an Ubuntu VM, Windows VM, or (now) MacOS and do whatever I am looking to do.
projects in the near future:
1. my mac-mini server runs ubuntu server and need apps. I'm thinking about Heimdall and a next cloud instance that I can reach via tailscale. I will also use it as an exit node for my tailscale network.
2. Making the server sleep when not in use and use an old RPi to 'wake it up' also over tailscale.
3. Making a portable router out of a Radxa Rock 4c that also use tailscale as a vpn alternative using the exit node.
